Stephen Chase

Stephen is a composer/performer/sound artist whose work is moving increasingly towards a consideration of the relationship between sounds, actions and the places in which they are performed, and which is the result of an open collaborative process. His work has involved writing ‘conventionally’ notated music for the concert hall to pieces for actors, improvisers, and site-specific settings.
“For the residency I will create a performed installation piece which will make use of the unique acoustic character of Bank Street Arts. The piece will be presented four times and on each occasion it will be a newly adapted version in response to my experience of the space(s).
In addition to the installation I’ll be presenting four evening events thematically related to the installation and featuring brand new and classic work by leading figures in the fields of experimental music and sound art. The residency will be a great opportunity for me to develop and give focus to some of my ideas about the relationship between sound and space, and will hopefully offer me the chance to meet and possibly work with artists from other fields. (Besides exploring the acoustic character of the space, part of the idea behind the installation is to develop a text which will evolve from a collage of fragments, commenting obliquely on aspects of the installation, into something else…)
In connection with the final evening event I am interested in holding a music workshop (no previous musical training would be required) with the idea of developing a piece in response to Bank Street Arts and environs, focusing on experimental practices, in particular, those which relate to ideas of installation, performance art, the everyday, and acoustic perception.”

“…rise and go…”

Stephen Chase presents a performance installation specifically designed for Bank Street Arts alongside four evening events thematically linked to the installation featuring brand new and classic work by leading figures in the fields of experimental music and sound art.
